Van Buren, Missouri — March 20, 2024 — Amidst a gathering of esteemed guests, community members, staff and students, the Van Buren R1 School District proudly unveiled a new memorial on its campus to honor those who have bravely served in the various branches of the United States Armed Forces. The memorial, featuring six impressive granite stones, bears the names of over 730 Van Buren R1 alumni who have completed their service.
Set around the flagpole near the entrance to the gymnasium, the memorial stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the district's graduates in defense of our nation's freedoms. The unveiling ceremony drew a significant crowd, with attendees eager to pay tribute to the individuals whose names are now immortalized on the stones.
"We are immensely proud to unveil this memorial, recognizing the dedication and service of our graduates who have answered the call to serve in the Armed Forces," remarked Amy Jackson, Superintendent of the Van Buren R1 School District. The district would like to thank Mike Schoelhamer, First Sergeant Retired, from Congressman Jason Smith’s Office for joining us today as a guest speaker and Steve Bubanovich for playing the Star Spangled Banner. Our High School Color Guard also presents the flags during the ceremony.
The creation of the memorial was made possible through the vision of Don Ricker and the combined efforts of numerous individuals within the Van Buren community. Their collaboration and support have ensured the realization of this meaningful tribute on the school campus. Bill Moriarity and Dennis McSpadden presented Don Ricker with a plaque of appreciation for his vision and leadership for the memorial.
As the community of Van Buren R1 looks towards the future, this memorial will serve as a timeless tribute to the courage and sacrifice of its graduates who have answered the call to serve their country. For those who have a service member among their family or friends who have completed their service and their name is not yet on the memorial, the district office can offer further assistance.
